Chapter Six - Helen

“And he smells so terrible! Like old, cheap cologne that he doused himself with! I mean, how can anyone think that smells good? Half the time he’s near me I want to tell him to back the hell off, but I need this job, you know? How do I… politely tell him that he smells like shit?”

Lou-Anne stared at Helen, a glimpse of amusement in her eyes. No matter how often Helen rambled or went off topic, she knew the therapist found her amusing; She was just too professional to admit it.

“Well, I suppose you can start off by not telling him he smells like fecal matter or mentioning fecal matter in any way. Perhaps you can say, Max, while I highly respect and value you, your choice of fragrance is unpleasant to me. I would like for you to maintain a suitable distance between us so that I may continue to interact with you professionally while also not being uncomfortable.”

Helen blinked at her. “That’s a lot of words just to say that someone smells like shit.” She had gotten a large whiff of the foul stench when he visited her desk that morning, and the smell lingered throughout most of her shift.

Lou-Anne chuckled. “I suppose it is. Why don’t you simply tell him that you are sensitive to strong fragrances, and suggest that he keeps some distance from you when wearing it? Either way, it will solve your problem. Either he’ll stay away from you, or he’ll change his cologne, and you’ll sound professional at the same time.”

Helen still didn’t like the choice of words, but she nodded anyway, figuring she would settle on something later on. “I’ll try that, thank you.”

The therapist folded her hands in her lap and gave Helen a long look. “I do recall asking how work was going, and instead you pivoted into a rant about the strong cologne that your boss wears.”

“Because it stinks.”

“While I understand that, I also can’t help but think you are deflecting. Every week, I ask you about work and your life, and every week you run around my questions and don't give me entire answers. Is there a reason you're avoiding my questions?”

Helen fidgeted in her seat, picking at one of her nails. “I don’t think I’m avoiding your question at all. Talking about my boss is related to my work.”

Lou-Anne sighed, straightening up. “The two of us have had sessions for a long time now, and I just want to make sure you are receiving what you expect from these sessions. You are paying me to talk with you and give you insights into your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, yet you share very little of these with me. This worries me, and it makes me wonder if I am doing an adequate job with you.”

“You absolutely are,” Helen assured her. “I always feel better after talking with you.”

“I wish I felt the same. After every session with you, I only have more questions. You
